Kay Sparkes, author of Royal Icing on the Cake went on BBC Radio 4 as a Guest on "Saturday Live" New Years Day, 1st January 2011 at 9am. Kay, formerly of Castle Cary, Somerset, UK, was interviewed by Fi Glover, the Radio 4 Presenter. The interview was about how a Royal Wedding Cake was made in the austerity years of Great Britain in 1947. The wedding was for Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, formerly of Greece. This was based on Kay's book "Royal Icing on the Cake".
Royal Icing on the Cake is the wonderful story of how a baker boldly wrote to Buckingham Palace offering a wedding cake.
The wedding was for Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, which took place at Westminster Abbey on 20th November 1947.
The story is told by the baker's daughter, Kay Sparkes, who at the time was five years old. Read this first hand account of how the dream of baking the cake became a reality, the excitement it caused, not only in the bakery, but also in the town of Castle Cary, Somerset.
Find out how all the difficulties in Post War Britain were overcome. How did this West of England baker get his ingredients? What kind of transport was used to deliver the cake? How did he get enough petrol for the long journey to the Palace? Did the baker and his wife actually get to meet the Princess?
Find out all the details and more in Kay Sparkes' book - Royal Icing on the Cake.
